American-born artist William Utermohlen, diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1996, has chronicled the resulting emotional turmoil, and physical and mental decline, in a series of evocative self-portraits. The cover image, entitled "Mask (white)," was made around the time of his diagnosis. In "Alzheimer's Disease," Vernon Ingram describes the genetic basis and molecular pathology of Alzheimer's, as well as some cutting-edge therapies that may finally treat or perhaps even prevent the disease.
