Cary Fowler earned a PhD in sociology from Uppsala University in Sweden in 1992. He was executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust from 2007 to 2012, and remains as special advisor. He has been involved in every stage of the creation of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and is currently chair of its International Advisory Council.
