To the Editors:
In her essay “Fighting Science Misinformation” (Spotlight, March–April), Katie L. Burke chronicles the dawning realization that clearly communicating science, while necessary, is not sufficient to ensure that science shapes policy. How ironic, then, that the colloquia on this topic, held under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, are sponsored by the Dame Jillian and Dr. Arthur M. Sackler Foundation for the Arts, Sciences and Humanities. The Sackler family owns Purdue Pharma, which, in its quest to sell opiates, has been credibly accused of ignoring the advice of its own scientists. Perhaps the National Academies should find a cleaner sponsor?
