Maddalena Bearzi is president and cofounder of the Ocean Conservation Society and a nature and travel journalist. She received her Ph.D. in biology@the University of California, Los Angeles, and has studied dolphins and whales in California and other parts of the world for more than 20 years. She is the coauthor, with Craig Stanford, of Beautiful Minds: The Parallel Lives of Great Apes and Dolphins (Harvard University Press), whose paperback edition was released this year.
