Alex (Sandy) Pentland is the Toshiba Professor of Media, Arts and Sciences@Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a pioneer in computational social science, organizational engineering and mobile information systems. Pentland directs the Human Dynamics Laboratory and the Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program, which helps develop international applications for new technologies. Among the most cited computer scientists in the world, Pentland has cofounded more than a dozen companies. In 1997, Newsweek named him one of the 100 Americans likely to shape the 21st century. His most recent book, Honest Signals: How They Shape Our World, was published in 2008 by The MIT Press.
