Sir Francis Graham-Smith received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1952, after spending most of World War II working at the Telecommunications Research Establishment at Malvern. He was the 13th Astronomer Royal from 1982 to 1990. He has been the director of both the Royal Greenwich Observatory and the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories at Jodrell Bank.
