To the Editors:

The Computing Science column “Computers That Can Run Backwards” by Peter J. Denning and Ted G. Lewis (September–October) left out the work I did in 1982, showing that quantum mechanical models of computers as quantum Turing machines are theoretically possible. As was stated explicitly in my article (Benioff, P. 1982. Physics Review Letters 48:1581.), these models do not dissipate energy.
