To the Editors:
I really enjoy American Scientist, but as a retired industrial chemist, certain things jump out at me. In "A Sound Use for Heat" (Science Observer, November-December 2007), the photo of Orest Symko heating a ceramic/glass device with a blowtorch without the use of safety glasses is the most recent such item. It is hard enough to convince science students and young employees to use protective equipment without showing an esteemed scientist in a respected publication not using safety equipment. Although it is difficult to catch every such incident, I encourage you to be more vigilant.
