SCIENCE IN THE NEWS WEEKLY

A Biblical Gate, A Slave Ship's Wreck

A number of archaeological discoveries made news last week. In Israel, researchers reported finding the remains of an ancient gate from the biblical city of Sha'arayim, which is associated with the story of David and Goliath.

Researchers also reported the discovery of the only known wreck of a ship involved in the illegal slave trade. Named the Trouvadore, the ship was wrecked on a reef off the coast of the Turks and Caicos Islands in 1841, freeing 193 Africans who were being brought to the United States.

Elsewhere, European scientists said the remains of Nicolaus Copernicus have been identified by comparing DNA from a skeleton and hair found in one of the 16th-century astronomer's books. His theories identified the sun as the center of the solar system.

And a 220 million-year-old fossil discovered in China has shed light on how the turtle's shell evolved. The evidence suggests that its breast plate developed earlier than the rest of its shell.
