Although the incorporation of International Darwin Day first happened in 2000, less official celebrations of the event have been going on sporadically since the late 1800s. In 2009, the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birthday brought an outpouring of articles about the famous scientist (including this one from American Scientist about Darwin’s mysterious illness after his return from South America).
This year’s Darwin Day marks the first time it’s an official holiday in at least one U.S. state: Delaware proclaimed February 12 as Charles Darwin Day.
